Choosing a puppy collar: what actually matters in the first year

Buy the size that fits today, not the size he will grow into. A loose collar rotates, slides forward and comes off over the head. Expect to buy once more before the first birthday, and check the fit with two fingers every two weeks.

Every puppy owner is told to buy one size up so the collar lasts. It is the single most common piece of advice in this category and it produces the exact failure it is trying to avoid.

Why buying big fails

A collar sized for a future dog sits loose on the current one. Loose collars rotate, which puts the buckle under the throat and the identification plate face down in the coat. They also slide forward toward the ears, where the neck narrows, and a puppy that plants his feet and reverses will be out of it in a second.

The saving is smaller than it looks. A first collar is worn for three to five months on a medium breed. The alternative is not "one collar instead of two", it is "a collar that does not do its job for four months, and then a second collar anyway".

What to buy at twelve weeks

Measure rather than guess, using the base of the neck with two fingers flat under the tape. For most medium breeds that lands at S or M at twelve weeks. Small breeds start at XS and often stay there.

SizeNeckTypical stage
XS7 – 10.5 inToy breeds, or any puppy at 8–12 weeks
S9 – 12.5 inSmall breeds, medium breeds at 3–5 months
M11 – 14.5 inMedium breeds from roughly 5 months
L13.5 – 17.5 inLarge breeds from roughly 6 months

When to size up

Not on a schedule. On three signals: you can no longer get two fingers flat underneath, the buckle has reached its last hole, or the puppy coughs on the lead. The third one means today.

Check every two weeks, and check at the same point on the neck each time so you are comparing like with like. Growth in puppies comes in steps rather than a smooth curve, and a collar that fitted on Sunday can be tight by Friday during a growth spurt.

Should a puppy collar be engraved?

Yes, and earlier than most owners do it. The window when a puppy is most likely to get out of a garden is the same window when he has no recall, does not know his street, and is small enough to fit through a gap an adult dog cannot. A microchip is registered at the first vet visit but a chip needs a scanner, and the person who finds a loose puppy is a neighbor, not a shelter.

Engrave a phone number you answer and the puppy's name. Skip the address. If you are between names in the first fortnight, wait: the collar is quick to replace, but a plate that says a name you no longer use is worse than one that says nothing.

What to look for in the collar itself

  • A flat plate rather than a hanging tag. Puppies chew what dangles, and a hanging tag catches on crate wire.
  • A buckle with several holes. Range is the whole point at this age.
  • A soft-edged strap. Puppy skin marks easily, and an unfinished edge shows on a short coat.
  • A color you can see at a distance. On a dark coat, brown and black disappear from a few feet away. That works against you when the point is that a stranger notices there is something to read.

The second collar

When you buy it, keep the first. A collar that fits a growing dog for four months fits a visiting dog, a foster, or the same dog again after an illness. It also gives you a spare with the same number on it, which is worth more than it sounds on the day a strap breaks.

Getting a puppy used to wearing it

Put the collar on for the first time before a meal, not before a walk. The puppy scratches at it, then food arrives, and the association forms in the right direction. Fifteen minutes on the first day, an hour on the second, and by the end of the week it is furniture.

Resist taking it off every time he paws at it. That teaches a fast lesson: pawing removes the collar. If he is genuinely distressed rather than curious, the fit is wrong, and that is worth checking with two fingers before anything else.

The lead comes later

A collar and a lead are two separate lessons, and running them together is why so many puppies plant their feet at the front door. Give the collar a week on its own. When you do attach a lead, let him drag it around the house under supervision before you ever hold the other end, so that the first tension he feels is his own and not yours.

What changes at six months

Adolescence is when recall gets worse rather than better, and it is the period when most dogs go missing for the first time. It is also when a puppy is usually moving into his second collar. Engrave the second one the day it arrives rather than the week after: the gap between collars is exactly when an identification is missing and nobody notices.

What to do with the first collar

Keep it. A collar outgrown at five months is barely worn, and it has your phone number already cut into the plate. It becomes the spare that lives in the car, the one that goes on a visiting dog, and the one you reach for on the day a buckle breaks two miles from home. Owners who throw the first one away almost always end up ordering a second identical collar within the year.

One caution if you pass it on to another household: have the plate re-engraved rather than sent as it is. A collar carrying somebody else's phone number is worse than a collar carrying none, because it stops the finder looking any further.
